Direct cable connection

Is there anyway to set up a direct cable connection using
the LPT ports on the computers and have a COM&IRQ
associated with the connection on both computers?

XP can set up a DCC connection over LPT, but it will give you IP over the
LPT ports - not a virtual COM port.

Can you set up whatever software you have that requires a COM port to
instead use an IP address?

If not perhaps you can run IP over your LPT cable (or just run IP across 2
NICs, for that matter) and use some 3rd party software to provide a virtual
COM port over the IP network.

If you search google there is a lot of 3rd party software providing Serial
over IP:
