Nextwork in XP without going thru web

How do I make a direct network connection using a router cable between my two
computers with XP without networking through the web? I have just upgraded
both computers to XP Professional. Before the upgrade they were running
Windows 2000 and had a direct network connection with the router cable. I
was able to share printers and folders.

Computer A is the primary and connects directly to the internet, Computer B
has internet access via the router cable. These internet connections
currently work in XP.

I would like to duplicate the earlier network setup for sharing printers and
folders in XP Pro without going out on the web for the connection.

Run the Windows Network Setup Wizard. I have a desktop and a laptop that
comprise my home network. My DSL connection runs to my desktop via the
Ethernet ports on the desktop and the modem. This modem is also a wireless
gateway, so my laptop sees the network and can connect to the internet and
share my printers and files on my desktop. It does this without going on
the internet. This is what a home network is.

I tried the Windows Network Setup Wizard but it doesn’t achieve the
result that I want. Also my router is not a wireless router.
Here’s some additional information. My two computers are connected
to a router and the router is connected to the cable modem. In the Windows
2000 environment, the computers used NetBEUI to talk to each other in my home
network (a simple LAN). Apparently XP doesn’t support NetBEUI and wants to
us to use a TCP/IP connection (go out on the web) to communicate within a
home network (LAN). I do not want to do that because it makes my home
network more vulnerable to hacking.
In other words, in XP what alternative(s) are to the TCP/IP protocol
for connecting a home network?

If you have cross over cable then you can manually set the connection parameters
as follows:

TCP/IP Settings for PC # 01
IP address:192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

TCP/IP Settings for PC # 02
IP address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

The fact that you are using TCP/IP does not mean that you are also
necessarily connecting the two computer via the web. In fact, all
communications between the two computers need never reach the internet
regardless of which protocol they use to communicate. If you are using the
router to furnish IP addresses, it uses the 192.168.x.x numbers which are
not routable to the internet anyway.
