Direct cable connection Windows XP to Windows 98

I want to access the image files on Windows 98 computer
by Windows XP (home) computer and have connected the two
by CAT 5 Cross Wired (2M) cable. I've tried following the
XP's interactive help and realise what most passengers on
the Titanic felt like. Apart from becoming seriously
apostate, can you help me to connect and transfer files
successfully from Windows 98 comp's shared docs?

Create a user/password on the W98 machine that
corresponds with a user/password on teh Xp machine....
