The message could not be sent. An error has occurred

I am unable to digitally sign my Email messages however I do not have a
problem when I don't.

I would like to know if the are any fixes for this problem?

I'm also looking for a fix as I have the same or a similar problem. I also
have some information that may be the same as other people that have this
problem.

1) adding a certificate using certmgr works just fine and the certificate is
visible from certmgr afterwards
2) the accounts::security tab in Windows Mail can see the certificate
3) The certificate does NOT show up in the Personal tab of
"Options::Security::Digital IDs... from Windows Mail
4) The certificate also does NOT show up in the Internet
Options::Content::Certifcates tool in IE7
5) adding a certificate from IE7 or Windows Mail does not help the situation

In some regards it seems that IE7 and parts of Windows Mail are looking in
the wrong place for the certificate, but I can't figure out how to tell them
what the right place is.

This seems to be a very common problem in Windows Mail. There are several
other posts above that also point to the same issue. I have a Thawte
certificate and it shows and does not show in all the same places you have
listed.

I wonder why this is so difficult: What is the reason for this error message?
Does anyone at Microsoft know? Does anyone in the entire world?

Not many people use digital signing of messages, so you'll find few
experts on that topic.
One solution is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail (WLM):
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

If WLM also gives you a digital signing problem, get more info here:
https://help.live.com/help.aspx?mkt=en-us&project=liveidv1&format=b2&querytype=keyword&query=qaf#sr0
or you can get direct support for it from Microsoft:
https://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlmaildesktop&ct=eformts

Microsoft does not support Windows Mail.

Why would they ship it with Windows Vista if they do not support it??
IMO Windows Mail is one of the better modules of Vista. The spam filter
works great. It is simple and works. Except when I want to secure
my messages. Microsoft or Thawte should work on a solution for this as
it is a very common problem. Well maybe Windows 7 will hold the key ...
I will have to rush out and buy another three copies ....

Microsoft no longer supports Windows Mail because they have offered
Windows Live Mail as a replacement. It wouldn't make sense for them
to support two different free email programs. Windows Live Mail was
not ready to go when Vista shipped, which is why they included the
stopgap Windows Mail program. Windows 7 will not include any email
program, but it will have a download link for Windows Live Mail.
Anyone who wants to be ready for Windows 7 had better get acquainted
with Windows Live Mail now.
