Digital Camcorders, Video, MPEG-2 and MS Movie Maker 2

Question: If I buy a hard drive based camcorder (JVC GZMG50) - which records
in MPEG-2 format, can I use movie maker 2 to edit these files as I did with
my old Mini DV camcorder ? And what is the real deal with the lossy
compression ? WIll Movie Maker degrade my cideo footage ??

Thanks for any input.

Your mini DV camcorder produced DV-AVI files which are fully compatible
with WMM.
WMM is exceedingly fussy about what file types it will work with.
Remember that WMM is a free utility, MS do not pay propriatary license
fees (or it wouldn't be free!) Hence incompatibilty with quicktime etc etc
MPEG2 is a codec dependent file type. It will be a safe assumption that
the JVC won't produce MPEG's that are WMM compliant.
The JVC *may* come bundled with free conversion software? That may
allow the MPEGs to be converted to WMV or AVI?
But the simple answer is, MPEG2's are not compatible with WMM.
