Copying VHS tapes to DVD discs

I recently purchased a JCV mini-DV camcorder with firewire connection. While
attempting to copy VHS tapes from VCR to digital camcorder passing through to
PC using a firewire cable Movie Maker gives me the following message "No
Tape Detected" and I cannot go any further with the recording process. I am
using a JVC GRD-72U mini-DV camcorder. I have used the Movie Maker to
capture and edit other videos that are stored on the camcorder tapes but
having no success with the pass through process.

MM2 does not support pass through, if you upgrade to sp2 then MM2.1 does.
Otherwise have a read of www.papajohn.org where he has links to a free M/S
app that will do it for you.

Thank you Graham. I guess I didn't clearly state the problem, I am using
Movie Maker 2.1 Service Pack 2 edition. I'm wondering if maybe the JVC
GRD-72U video camera might not be pass through capable.

I'm afraid that I don't know, visit jvc's site and read through the specs if
you don't have a manual, either should tell you if it does.
Also check out www.papajohn.org as he has some helpful hints on doing pass
through with MM.
If it's desperate you could always record to a tape and then on to pc,
longer I know, but it'll get the job done in the mean time.

Hi all, when copying vhs to dvd how much of the tape can I get on the hard
drive so I can edit and then transfer to movie cd? I have 2 80 gig hard
drives.

Not much; but 2.8 gigs with windows on it, some apps etc. must be down to
around 2 gigs. Then hr as avi will be 300 minimum from camera, then convert
to dvd format, including any needed temp files during process, then burn.

You'll be very tight and that's not even considering you'll be wasting 50%
or more of usable DVD "space" every time you burn.

HD's just aren't that expensive, upgrade.

Yea but it'll take approx 4.5 gigs and as best I know it's done as a file
before the actual burning, hence 2.8 gig hd ain't much use.

OK... let's start at the beginning.

I have no idea if you have an analog capture card in the Dell Dimension
e510, it's impossible for me to know the specs of every PC ever on the
market.

Once we establish whether or not you have analog hardware AND software, then
we can go future.
