I just refreshed my home computer and the new one uses XP, home edition. I'm
pretty sure that it was delivered with the SP2 installed.

I tried loading Office 97 and if failed while attempting to update the
registry.

I was considering an update after it was installed but I can't get that far.

Let me guess: You were running as a limited user when you tried to
install it.(note 1)

Certain registry updates can be performed only if you are an
administrative user. So temporarily log in as administrator while
installing programs.

Note 1: If the above isn't the explanation, I don't know what is.

Note 2: I don't know any particular reason why Office 97 wouldn't
run on XP, but maybe there is such a reason.

Thanks Stan. The reason that I updated my computer is that my adult children
keep downloading junk to the point that the previous computer was worthless.
The first thing I did with the new one was set myself up as administrator and
everyone else as limited. I appreciate your suggestion.

If it is of any interest, I used to run Office 97 on my XP computer without
problem.

Thanks Nigel, I've been looking around and some poster are relating the SP2
upgrade to Office 97 problems. Have you heard anything about that?
