Different footer for each page

How do I put a different footer on each page in a document? I'm using MS
2003. I've tried to add sections but I cannot get this to work. If I change
the footer in a section, it changes the footer on each page. For page one, I
want a footer, for page two, I want a different footer, on page three, I want
another different footer and so on...... Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks!

I appreciate your time.

Rrupp:

Sections are the only way to create actual header and footer content.

Each section can store (in effect) a header and footer for the first page,
even page, and odd page in that section.

You may be having difficulty because Word's default behavior when adding
section breaks is to set the Header and Footer to "Same as Previous" meaning,
same as the previous section. In effect the new section's headers and footers
are linked into the previous section's headers and footers, and any change
you make in any one of them is made in all of them.

So. Create a new section where you want a different header or footer, but
make sure you open the Header and Footer toolbar (View > Header and Footer)
and click the "Same as Previous" button to pop it out. The text above the
header or footer should no longer say "Same as Previous."

It is difficult to understand sections from a strictly logical point of
view. I encourage you to work with them to help you understand.

I hope some MVPs will provide links to the excellent articles you can read
at your leisure to gain a deeper understanding.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I will try this, thanks for
explaining it so well, I appreciate you taking the time to walk me through
this.

Alternate possible approach--making every page into its own section is
not necessarily a great idea, unless that fits with the logical flow of
your document.

If the footer is reflecting, say, a heading in the main text, then you
could use a StyleRef field to pull that text into the footer, and the
StyleRef field will change automatically based on the heading on that page.

The "Beyond Numbering" section on this page details setting one up:
