difference between win 98 and win xp

Win98 still operated on the Dos settings, while WinXP is operating on the NT
kernel.
XP has absorbed all the old Dos settings.
When you go to the Windows command prompt, you are inside of a shell that
still uses Dos commands but controlled completely by the NT kernel.
Most of the old Dos commands still work though.
