Did XP Pro upgrade; modem no longer works

I recently upgraded my Toshiba Satellite laptop from XP
Home to XP Pro. My modem no longer works. Tech Support
from Toshiba was no help. Said it was a problem with Dial-
up networking in the XP Pro upgrade and they wouldn't
support it since it was not factory installed. Any ideas?

Hmm.. A common problem when upgrading a Home+SP1 machine to Pro is that
parts of SP1 are overwritten. You need to re-apply SP1 to the machine, and
then get online and apply all critical patches via WindowsUpdate.

If this modem was your way of getting online, You'd be best off finding a
friend with a fast connection and a CD burner.

Get the network version here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
and burn it to a CD.

You can order SP1 on cd:

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ordercd.asp

but it specifies 2-4 weeks for delivery.

Looks like that's gonna work. I installed SP1 and am in
the middle of the security updates but I took a quick look
at my network connections and my ISP is back. Thanks a
bunch!!!

Try re-downloading the modem driver from Toshiba's website or check
the first recovery CD for a driver.
