did a dumb thing with usb mouse + keyboard

hi
i accidently deleted entries for USB mouse and keyboard in SETTINGS>
DEVICE MANAGER . can't do anything anymore.
now the whole HID (human interface ....) category is gone. now
normally you have to unplug + plug in your mouse + keyb. and it
automatically re installs itself. in my case (likely because the WHOLE
category is gone) it won't. a hardware assistant window (new hardware
found) pops up but needs to know from where to install these new
hardware instead of doing so automatically.

i have thought about 3 options:

1) safe mode
booting in SAFE MODE : maybe it will get installed automatically in
this mode. but i have to choose between ADMMINISTRATOR or MY ACCOUNT
and therefore need the keyboard before i'm in the main windows. maybe
anyone knows if its possible to log in automatically in SAFE MODE

2) registry
probably i need to change some values/ keys in the registry. but the
thing is i don't really know if it's a device driver issue or a USB
issue and also don't know the path in the registry that i need to
change in this case. i searched for keywords "USB-HID" and some mouse
stuff but i don't really know.
so maybe an windows expert can tell me what changes are done to the
registry and/or windows settings if i delete something in the device
manager

3) repair installation
windows repair installation. if i follow through i end up in a dos
like console which just says
C:/windows

i don't really know how to repair windows with just that showing on
the screen

If you can at least get Windows at all, e.g., Safe Mode, try
rolling your system back to the latest System Restore Point prior
to your mistake. Or, load the image you previously created as a
backup. You DO make backups, right? And, you DO keep your own
data separate from Windows so it doesn't go down the tubes too?

i do have an image / backup but it's too old to be of any value for
me :)

i'm just working on getting my safe mode to work (get rid of login
window at the boot process) to get to the last system restore point
(via the special "console" safe mode)

but if that don't work too only thing left is to RE ACTIVATE mouse /
keyboard in my registry. in case nobody can tell me exactly what
buttons to push in the registry is there any board that specializes in
the windows xp registry ? i'm sure there are people that know exactly
where to look, it's my last chance ...

as far as i checked i can't contact microsoft directly eg. via email
cause my PC is a DELL pc and the OS was already installed on that so i
gotta contact dell. i sent an email to dell but i'm not sure if they
know.

OK, hope you succeed. Looks like you'll be well-motivated to
upgrade your backup regimen! said:

Have you tried Googling in general or looking at Kelly's Korner XP
Tweaks?

hm no but i'll check out kellys corner

so now the windows REPAIR installation "worked". it fixed the problem
but resulted in some further trouble. now the IE and WMP (among other
windows tools maybe, those 2 i noticed so far) are somehow corrupted.
it was because during the installation process there was an error ->
reboot -> requested "asms" file to be installed but could not find it
in the cd rom. so now i finished the installation skipping over the
error message.

i have made a backup of the system. so i'll try it again.
i just thought the "registry" way would be less troublesome ...
