Dialup Internet connection & Standby mode in Windows XP Pro

Andrew Murray

I have XP Professional (SP2), and often I put the PC into standby mode,
rather than power-off (e.g. leave in standby overnight) so it is a quicker
start the next time I use the PC.

However I've noticed if I "wake up" the PC from standby and dial-in to my
ISP the connection seems to go dead after a few minutes - no mail
(pop3/smtp - Outlook Express), News Groups ( Outlook Express) or web (IE6
(SP2), and I need to restart the PC to get the internet dialup connection
functioning correctly again.

Usually a restart will solve the problem, in which case I may as well power
off the PC anyway and do a cold-boot each time.

Any one know of any known issues with using XP standby mode (Start > Turn
Off Computer > Standby).
and using a dialup internet connection when the system is woken up from
Standby?

Internet otherwise functions fine, I don't believe this is an ISP problem at
my end.

Thanks.

If you have a newer computer, why do you need to put it on standby anyway?
I can boot my computer in less than 30 seconds from power off state. Unless
you are using a laptop, there isn't much need for standby or hibernate
anymore. I always disable them on new system setups.
