Dialup connection problems

Kev

Hi!

I have a problem with my internet connection. I signed up
to Tiscali and whenever I dial to connect to the internet,
it says its connected (though it really doesn't look like
it..), stays on for up to 2 minutes, and then the
connection drops.

I tried using another totally separate dialup account (an
MCI one), and it did the same... seemed to connect, and
then just bombed out after 2 minutes. I also tried
setting up new connections, one to a Freeserve server, and
one directly to my office, and the same happens all the
time.

The modem is a Conexant V92 modem, and the drivers are up
to date, so I'm not sure what the problem is...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Why do you say that? I'd guess because your web browser and email client
aren't working, but if its something else please explain!

Someone might have a better suggestion but I'd kick off with dialing you
ISP and then opening a command prompt window and typing:
ipconfig /all

this should show amoungst other things what DNS servers your using -
these should be different for each ISP. Also, try pinging a known
address, e.g.:
ping news.bbc.co.uk

Do you get a response from this?

I did not get a normal response. It seemed to resolve the
name but I just got a timed out response...

Thanks for your help so far! Now where do I go with this?

I have a modem log, if that'll help... I don't know how
much of it I should post here though...

Okay, well I guess if its resolving then thats a start! You're
communicating with the DNS server fine then. I'm assuming the address is
correct. news.bbc.co.uk gives me 212.58.226.40, although it might vary.
You get different IP addresses for different domain names yes?
Thanks for your help so far! Now where do I go with this?

{Ahem}... well... okay.. in the interests of "full disclosure" I really
don't know. I was rather hoping that someone who does know would step in!

But in the absense of said "Guru", I'd start working with what you do
know. If the IP address *is* resolving, then *why* is it not working?

What exactly is it that isn't working? If its your browser, could you
first make sure you've cleared the cache just to make sure that isn't
confusing the matter.

Next up, try using TRACERT (trace route: it *sort of* pings each node
along the route to the destination address). This way we might be able
to see *where* things are going pear-shaped. Try this:

tracert news.bbc.co.uk

for me, using BT Internet as an ISP, I get the following:

Tracing route to newswww.bbc.net.uk [212.58.226.40]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 240 ms 211 ms 190 ms imsnet-cl12-hg47.ealing.mdip.bt.net
[213.120.208
..177]
2 200 ms 201 ms 190 ms 192.168.251.200
3 191 ms 200 ms 200 ms 172.16.95.28
4 190 ms 190 ms 201 ms btfl04-gig8-7.imsnet3.btopenworld.com
[213.1.119
..157]
5 190 ms 201 ms 200 ms core1-pos6-2.ealing.ukcore.bt.net
[194.72.9.249]

6 211 ms 200 ms 200 ms core1-pos4-0.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net
[194.74.65.
113]
7 190 ms 200 ms 201 ms 194.74.65.6
8 190 ms 201 ms 200 ms 212.58.239.202
9 201 ms 200 ms 190 ms 212.58.239.197
10 210 ms 200 ms 201 ms news.bbc.co.uk [212.58.226.40]

Trace complete.

What do you get?

I have a modem log, if that'll help... I don't know how
much of it I should post here though...

Its probably safe, but you're right to err on the side of caution! Also,
I wouldn't bother as we know (or we think we know) that domain names are
being resolved, so therefore there is communication so therefore the
modems must be talking okay. Probably!

It would be useful to post the output from tracert and also "ipconfig
/all"... the latter just shows your current IP address configuration. If
you're concerned about any information being confidential then either X
it out (and say you've done so) or swap some of the numbers around!

Another command that *might* be useful is:

route print

which outputs your routing table. Probably the most interesting part at
present is the last line saying "Default Gateway" as this address should
be the same address allocated to your modem (shown in ipconfig /all).

HTH!

HTH!
Thanks! It did... I've called up the line provider (BT)
and they said they'd need to look at it for me, the line's
quality wasn't great.

Thanks for your help on my extremely vague question :D

I will post if I get no further...
