dial-up stalls at "verifying user name..."

I'm trying to connect to an isp using dial-up under xp home. the modems
negotiate and then the connection stalls with either the "dialing" message
box still up or the "verifying user name" message. i've tried replacing the
modem. i've tried recreating the DUN connectoid. i also tried putting a new
hard drive in and installing windows from scratch. this worked indicating
that the hardware is okay. i can't fix the original installation though. any
ideas? thanks.

Open a HyperTerminal session using the dial-up telephone number. You
can then "see" just exactly what is going on when you enter the username
and password.

thanks for the advice. i tried it and it looks like the remote end is doing
its thing. presumably in the DUN connection the local end isn't responding
