when i connect via my dial up connection windows xp says the computer is
connected fine, but when i open internet explorer no webpages are displayed,
i have pinged www.bbc.co.uk and it says it is unreachable, the IP address is
the same IP address as the server i am connected to is. I think it must be a
problem with windows xp, i have connect successfully and viewed webpages on
another pc with the same dialup account.

many thanks

When you ping www.bbc.co.uk, does the error message say "Destination
host unreachable"? If so, the system doesn't have a default gateway
address for reaching the Internet. Make sure that "Use default
gateway on remote network" is enabled on the dial-up connection. To
make that setting:

1. Right-click the connection.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click Networking.
4. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.

"Net" unreachable is less common than "host" unreachable. It means
that the system has a default gateway address, but the default gateway
reports that it can't reach the destination address.

Does the message look something like this? If so, what value does it
show for w.x.y.z?

Reply from w.x.y.z : Destination net unreachable.

Is that value the same as the IP address of the dial-up connection?

BTW, the dial-up connection IP address is usually also the default
gateway IP address.

It might help to post a copy of the route table made after you connect
to your dial-up ISP. Enter this line in a command prompt window, then
copy/paste the contents of the "route.txt" file into the message:

route print >route.txt
