56k Dial up

Q

howcome when on 56k dialup, my IP is the same as my default gateway?
(according to windows)

According to route print, and ipconfig

(note- on tracert, the first hop is not my ip / my default gateways ip)

I am actually running 2 connections. My LAN-'home router' that is
permanently on, and my 56k dial up - just for experimenting(and perhaps
to check ports on my comp). But, i'm sure my question would be the case
even if I had just dial up running. Also, I don't think it's relevant,
but my dial up connection was default at time of testing, 'cos metric
was 1 in route print.

IP Address = Default Gateway is the normal behavior for a dial-up
(PPP) connection.

Right-click the dial-up connection and click Status | Details. You'll
see a Client IP Address (your computer) and a Server IP Address
belonging to your ISP.

thanks, that's interesting.

I see that the server ip is actually the next hop that tracert reports.

it'd make more sense in my mind if default gateway were that. But, I
guess I should read about PPP and find out.

now i've got something to go on.
