Dial-up Connection, "Save Password" doesn't work

If I check the Save Password box on my Dial-Up connection
panel, the next time I use it it is wrong. There are
twice as many characters (dots) as my password has so I
have to blank it out and retype. This is on XP Pro. Any
ideas?

Hi Brad,

The number of dots/stars does not correspond to the number of actual
characters in your password. It's a security precaution, to make it harder
to guess your password. If you use the saved password to connect, does it
work?

The stored password is probably correct. XP always displays a password as
14 dots to hide its length.

OK, that explains the number of dots, but the password IS incorrect. The
logon to the ISP always fails with "Incorrect password or userid" unless I
retype the password.

I think it is working fine, the password box is filled to
keep anyone of knowing the length of your PW.. The fill
is not active material.

I recieved the following help from nicholas on another forum that fixed the
problem:

Windows XP will encrypt and change the length of a password
for security purposes (so someone cannot determine the number
of characters if a hack is attempted).

If your password is incorrect, turn-off AutoComplete, reboot,
then turn-on AutoComplete, then re-enter your password.

Adjusting AutoComplete Settings:

To modify your settings for the AutoComplete feature or clear all items from
the list of form or password suggestions, follow these steps in Internet
Explorer:

1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Content tab.
3. Click AutoComplete.
4. Click the appropriate AutoComplete check boxes, or click Clear Forms
or Clear Passwords to clear all saved items from the appropriate
AutoComplete history.
Click OK, and then click OK.

This fix also applies to Outlook, other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and AutoComplete.
