Diablo2 and laptop fan

Hey everyone,

I just noticed an interesting quirk when I installed and
played DiabloII for the first time.

I've got a Centrino laptop with the Pentium-M 1.4GHz
processor. The processor can slow itself down to save
power while running on batteries. Right now when I go
into system properties, it says that the processor is
running at 600 MHz. It's been running at this speed for
the past while and I don't hear the fan that often when
it's running at this speed since the processor isn't
generating that much heat.

When I open up DiabloII, the fan instantly turns on. It
stays on during the entire time that I play the game. The
moment I return to Windows (XP), the fan shuts off...
DiabloII is a pretty old game and the required processor
is 233 MHz Pentium (the original Pentium), so I don't
think I'm pushing my system very hard here...

Any ideas as to why this is?

Thanks in advance.

Hi nkjg,

Sounds like the fans are being activated to cool
both your CPU and G(raphics)PU. Seems fine
to me, and perfectly normal. What do the folks
at the support desk for your laptop recommend?

Hi there,

I haven't checked with Compaq yet, but I'm probably not
even going to bother, since their most common reply
is "We don't support that...".

I'm not worried about anything breaking, but I'm just
confused as to why the fan turns on the moment that the
program opens and turns off the moment I'm back to the
desktop. This is regardless of how I adjust the in-game
graphics or if I'm just sitting at the game menu. The
underside of the laptop feels pretty darn cool.

Like I said before, I don't think I'm using the full
1.4GHz of my processor running this game, and that's
usually the only time that I hear the fan go on. During
startup, since the Windows APM (advanced power
management) drivers haven't been loaded yet, it takes
about 30 seconds for the fan to kick in while the laptop
is starting up.

I just tested another thing, while playing Red Alert 2, I
don't hear the fan at all, and the underside of the
laptop doesn't feel warm.

Thanks for the reply,

Nick

That's the *minimum* system requirement. Games tend to be processor (and
graphics) intensive, so it will cause the system to work harder and heat up.

The processor probably kicks up to near its max. speed, which would trip the
fan.
