Diabled Simple File Sharing - Still Security tab!

I've lost the Security tab I should see when I right click a folder and click
Sharing and Security. I've tried going through Tools, Folder Options, View,
and then unchecking the Use Simple File Sharing box. But still no security
tab! I've done this repeatedly, switching it back and forth. No dice. I've
rebooted repeatedly, still nothing. I've tried system restore back to a
point in time when I think everything worked, and it tells that nothing has
actually changed, so there's nothing to restore.

One really weird thing, the Sharing tab I do get when Simple File Sharing is
disabled IS the one that should be there. Its the one that has nothing on it
about sharing anything on the local computer, there are only controls for a
network
share, including how many users are allowed. If I enable Simple File
Sharing again, I get the correct Sharing tab for that, the one that has both
local and network sharing options. So apparently the system is switching
between Simple File Sharing enable/disable, its just not showing me the
Security tab when it does!

Any ideas? I've spent hours searching Knowledge Base, and I just keeping
getting the same old crap about disabling Simple File Sharing. HELP!

See if this helps:

No security tab change Method:
To change the value of this entry, use the Group Policy Object Editor
(Start\Run\Gpedit.msc). The corresponding policy is located in

Or go to: Start\Run\type "regedit" (no quotes) and hit Enter: Navigate to
the Explorer key in both the Local Machine and Current User hives and look
for a DWORD value named "NoSecurityTab", double click it, and disable it

Thanks for responding, the information you provided is good to know.

Turns out that wasn't the actual problem. I'm a little embarrassed to say
this, but I didn't set up this laptop, I won it in a charity raffle two years
ago. Because it came with XP already loaded, all this time I just assumed
the drive was NTFS. It wasn't!! When I converted it, the problem was gone.
Still, I wonder why it would switch to the File Sharing disabled sharing tab
for that setting if it couldn't execute it. I would have thought that that
setting wouldn't even appear under Tools, Options, View if XP couldn't use
it. That's what really had me stumped.

I could kick myself for not check the file system sooner. <grin>

Does it have the Group Policy snap in? (start\Run\gpedit.msc?). Logon in
safe mode and implement the security policy in gpedit, and watch the change
in the registry key, then export the key to a backup file and apply it in
normal mode.
