One day my w2k computer quit receiving a dhcp address and is not recognized
on the network.. I can in the ipconfig it does not recognize my ISP and it
gives me a windows autoconfig ip address instead of giving me a dhcp. If i
manually set a static ip it is recognized on the network but still will not
get on the internet.
It says under ipconfig/all that dhcp is enables but windows gives me that
autoconfiguaration ip address...
Please Help....

It sounds like the DHCP server is not working properly, or
is somehow blocked from reaching your network.

If the DHCP server is integrated into a local DSL modem or
cable modem, then I'd suggest you power cycle that device -
- turn it off, wait a couple of seconds, and turn it back
on. If the device isn't hosed, you should see your
computer pick up it's IP address rather quickly (once you
change it's configuration to "Obtain an IP address
automatically").

You shouldn't be fiddling around with static IP addresses -
- but you could ask your ISP to provide 4 values that you
could statically configure: IP address, default gateway,
and two (or more) DNS server addresses. The DHCP server
ordinarily provides all of this information, but does need
an intial configuration from you (providing the range of
IP addresses that are to be assigned, the default gateway
address, and the addresses of DNS servers).

I have the identical problem. Started Tuesday for no
apparent reason. I cannot get a DHCP ip address on my
laptop only. I have a dsl modem with a dlink wireless
router connected wired to my desktop and wireless or wired
to my laptop. My laptop will not get an IP address
through either LAN card. I know all hardware is working
because I installed a clean harddrive on my laptop and it
works fine (as has my desktop). I have come to the
conclusion it is a W2K problem, but have found no solution
short of reinstalling. I hate to jeopardize data by doing
so. Please help.

It is connected behind a hub and it is working fine...
It is an 8 port and all of the computers on it are working fine... Even when
i unplug my cable and plug it in to another computer it will work fine... It
is just something to do with my computer...

Is you machine directly connected to the Internet (behind a cable or DSL
modem) or is it on an internal network?
If it's directly connected to the internet (via a DSL or cable modem), then
you need to call your ISP (try rebooting the machine first).
If it's NOT directly connected to the Internet i.e. it's behind another NAT
router or firewall, then check that device to see if it's functioning
properly and if it's configured for DHCP.
