Hi

I have a small network of XP machines and have configured my ADSL router as a DHCP server. I have asked it to automatically detect
DNS servers, which I guess are dished out by my ISP.

I also have a network camera that has DHCP client capabilities. When I enable this and reboot the camera how do I know what it's IP
Address is? There is a place on the camera to fill in the name, but how does this get into the DNS server, and since I guess the DNS
server is on my ISP how can I ever expect to do the following:

ping <FriendlyName>

I'm just a big confused how it all hangs together.

I stumbled upon a utility in XP that might (or might
not!) get you started. If you go to Start>Help>Use
Tools...>Network Diagnostics>Scan your System, it will,
um, scan your system. I THINK this identifies all IPs on
your network, too, and if you know the other IPs, you can
narrow it down to your camera IP.

Also, try Start>Run, then type "CMD" (no quotes) and
enter. At the command prompt, type (no
quotes), "ipconfig /all". Note the space after
ipconfig. I don't know if this will give you the IP
you're looking for.... I'd be interested to see how/if
you figure this one out.

Good luck.
