DFRGNTFS.EXE keeps starting

Whenever my computer is idle for a period of time the disk
drive starts thrashing badly. I finally tracked it down by
starting task manager and leaving it running. A process
called dfrgntfs.exe (Disk Defragmenter) starts
automatically. When I touch the keyboard or move the mouse
the process dies.

Running Defragmenter is all well and good but I didn't set
it to run like this and it is damn annoying having the
loud noise start every few minutes whenever the machine is
left idle.

How do I stop it starting automatically?

It runs every three days. Let it finish. It trying to optimise various parts of the disk. It's not a full defrag.

But I don't want it to run ...

.... The question is "how do I stop it?"

Turning off Cryptographic services will I think kill the PITs completely,
but then a whole lot of other things like WU might not work..

There is more happening than just defragging. You can't turn off the feature
which is known as idle tasks and is run automatically by task scheduler.
System restore is doing some stuff. MS only says it does stuff like boot
optimising and system restore, impling it does other things as well.

Perhaps turning off TS may stop it. Turning off boot optimisation and system
restore would leave it with not much to do.
