It's good that you like PerfectDisk6, but that doesn't really address
the Original Poster's problem. On a well-ordered system with good
hardware, XP's own built-in defragger is just fine. It does the job and
doesn't take very long. Yes, third-party defraggers might be better for
power users, but they aren't necessary the way they were in older MS
operating systems (and NT didn't even have one).
To the Original Poster, 1) try doing your defrag in Safe Mode. If you
still have a problem in Safe Mode, it is time to do a hardware
diagnosis. You can get a free diagnostic utility from the drive mftr.'s
website.

Hi Malke and thanks for your thoughts. The key words in your response, to
me, were "well ordered" , which is, of course, hardly the case of a newly
created system or a system that has not been well maintained. I understand
your desire to try to get the user to work with the bundled defragger.
However, I personally ran into its marked limitations back on Release
Candidate 1 and started exploring other options at that time.
As to being a "power user", that phrase makes me giggle! Hardly! "Lazy"
would best describe my motivation toward software and hardware. That's why
I like XP and keep it updated. It works!
However, I would suggest to the user to download PerfectDisk for a 30 day
trial and at least clean up your system. You'll save a lot of time!!!
Then you can go back to the bundled software if you wish.
I strongly lean toward things that make my life easy and with as little
care as possible!
