Slow Defragmentation

I am running XP with SP3 on a 160GB hard drive, of which I have used about
10GB. I have a 1.8G processor.

I use Diskeeper 9 Professional to defrag. Until recently it would defrag in
about 10 to 15 mins at the most. It has now slowed down to a crawl.

I have tried using the built in XP defragger which completes very quickly. I
have tried Diskeeper Lite and that too takes a long time.

Even when I have just completed a defrag and run Diskeeper again it still
then takes an age to complete.

I have done a lot of Googling but can not come up with a solution.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I seem to have found the answer. I ran chkdsk, which ran through very
quickly and low and behold Diskeeper ran through in a matter of minutes.

So the problem seems to be solved.

over 1 hour and was only 20% complete even though the fragmentation level
was low enough to say it wasn't really needed. I have a 120gig disk with
72gig free. Any other suggestions?

Run Disk CleanUp before running Disk Defragmenter.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

After defragging, which may only take a few minutes, Diskeeper works at
consolidating files toward the front, if they are scattered throughout the
partition. If you have some really large files, or thousands of tiny files,
this can take a while.
