Registry Defragmentation

Brent N.

Some makers of various registry tools/utilities tout the ability to
defragment the registry. If one is running a disk defragmenter like
Diskeeper 8, which continually keeps the files containing the registry
defragmented, what is left to defragment, other than perhaps memory?

You're mixing Apples and Oranges. While the Registry is made up of
Hives (HKLM, HKCU) or specific modules. The Registry itself works
like a Database. The defrag you are talking about refers to "White
Space" or empty areas internal to the Registry. However, usually the
Registry even with years of use will only have 7% or less fragmentation.
You can get tools to compress or compact the Registry but I've tried
one or two on Virtual PC's and found little if any value to them for the
costs involved.

So they should be touting database compaction rather than
"defragmentation". Got it. Thanks.

I would say same re cleaners, scrubbers, washers, &
dry cleaners :)

In my tests, it was like trimming $1M from DOD budget
at the risk of shutting the pentagon down :)

Just my 2¢ worth- Larry
Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Good to hear from you, Larry. Our paths haven't crossed in this newsgroup
since Feb. 2003, when we were discussing IE menu extensions.

Thanks for your "2¢ worth".

If you want to try, the free NTRegopt which comes with the free ERUNT
registry back up from
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
does quite a good job
