Device Mgr Won't Install Unsigned Driver

I just purchased a Roland Fantom-X6 Music Workstation and am attempting to
get it communicating with my PC (XP SP2) via its USB connection. I have
uninstalled and installed numerous times with the same result: during
installation I am warned the driver is unsigned (despite the fact that
"Driver Signing" is set to lowest) and continue anyway. After rebooting, the
connection seems to work at first - a window pops up showing the storage on
the Fantom, but the drive letters show no subdirectories or files (they are
there). Then the window will vanish. An inspection in Device Mgr shows a
3-tier display: "USB Mass Storage Device", "Roland Fantom-X USB Device", and
"Generic Volume" -- all use Microsoft drivers, the Roland ".SYS" file is not
used. When I attempt to Update the driver on the device I get a message
stating "The location does not have any information on the hardware", even
though I am pointing it to the Roland "INF" file. Roland support says this is
a Microsoft problem, which it appears to be.
I have right-clicked on the "INF" file to install, I have re-installed
repeatedly - no luck.
Is there any way I can bypass the Device Mgr wizards? Can the device driver
be installed another way? I must get this connection working to transfer data.

What about the command line? Can device drivers be installed this way, or
perhaps a batch file?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
I've written music but can't get the WAV file transferred to my PC!
