You've changed the Computer Driver or HAL (Hardware Abstraction
Layer). This determination is made at XP install by information your PC's
BIOS holds. On some motherboards there is a setting to enable ACPI.
Most newer motherboards are all ACPI compliant, so that option will
not appear. Apparently, when you did the Repair install the incorrect
HAL was chosen. XP install has the ability for the user to manually
select the proper HAL. When the installation prompts for Device drivers
with an F6 key press, you press F5 instead. This will stop the install and
present a listing of available HALs. The choices vary depending on the
type of CPU used. ( Single Core, HyperThreaded, Dual-Core). To get
back your correct Power handling, you'll need to do another Repair
install.

A very useful reply, RM.

Sorry for confusing the ACPI power management with ATAPI (a term used for
IDE CD/DVD drives), but I went to answer the door and when I returned I
remembered it the wrong way.
