Device Manager in Win XP is blank

I recently upgraded to SP3 and now have no listings at all in device mgr.
All functions work, drives, usb, printers, etc. but nothing is listed in
device mgr. I've tried services.msc and the plug and play is set to
automatic, but still nothing. I've also tried doing a system restore to
several dates prior to the SP3 install, but each of the restores failed.
I'm running a Dell XPS with raid HD. I've contacted Dell and spent 2 hrs
with a tech on the phone to no avail. Any suggestions out there?

Thier is a hotfix for device mgr,its kb914450

The patch worked. Thanks alot for the info. I'd have been on the knowledge base forever trying to find the answer.
