Detect & Repair Missing / Address Autocomplete not working

Larry Tullos

I have Outlook 2003 with XP Pro /SP1. System originally had a version
of Outlook 2000 which I uninstalled and then installed Outlook 2003.
During OL2003 install I selected Upgrade (probably should not have).
Anyway, I now have a couple of issues (1) Detect & Repair is missing
off of Help menu, and (2) the address autocomplete feature does not
work even though "Automatic name checking" and "Suggest names while
completing To, Cc, and Bcc fields" are both checked. I also searched
and did not find the .nk2 file

Appreciate any help!

PS: I went to Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs -> Selected
Outlook 2003 -> Change -> Reinstall or Repair, but this did not
correct either of these problems.

Try using View | Toolbars to reset the menu. If that doesn't work, exit
Outlook, rename the outcmd.dat file, if it exists, then restart Outlook.

Have you sent any messages yet? Outlook builds the .nk2 autocomplete list
file from the addresses you send to.

Resetting the toolbars should restore Detect & Repair to the Help menu,
which was one of the original poster's issues. It has nothing to do with the
autocomplete issue.

A new profile will use a different .nk2 file and, therefore, will have no
autocomplete entries until you send some messages.

You didn't say what version of OUtlook you're using, and it's unclear
whether you're referring to autocomplete or autoresolution.

I also have the same issue as below. I have created a new profile, but it
did not fix the problem. As long as Outlook is open, it will automatically
check the names. However, when I close Outlook and re-open it, the cached
names no longer exist. The Cached Exchange Mode is not checked, however, I
verified it on another computer where it does work, that the Cached Exchange
Mode is also unchecked, so this property doesn't effect it one way or
another.
I am confused as to why resetting the toolbars would have any effect on
the automatic name checking feature. Any ideas?

Sorry for the inconclusiveness.
We are using Outlook 2003 on Windows XP.
I have a user that has the Automatic name checking and suggest names while checking the TO:, CC: and BCC: fields boxes checked. When he opens up Outlook in the morning, once he starts sending email messages, he then can utilize this feature. However, when he closes Outlook, and re-opens it, there is no history or cached names for either of these features. It starts to populate once again after he starts sending messages, but first he has to go to the address book. On my computer, I can close Outlook and re-open it, and it keeps a history. I don't have to go to the address book each time I send an email to the same person. It gives me the suggestions. I created a new profile for him, but it did the exact same thing as his old profile. Any ideas?

Check for the presence of an .nk2 file (see
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm for file locations). If you don't
see any, check the permissions on that folder to make sure the user can save
files.

Sue, thank you for replying to my question. You have helped me once
before and I know that you know your stuff! I'm just now getting back
to the newsgroup to update, so here's the deal on autocomplete.

I have been entering names all week, and then going back to check for
the .nk2 file being created. I have searched and it's not there, and
I have even made certain I have hidden files shown in Explorer. What
is bizarre is that I have one and only one name that will now show up
in autocomplete. But there is still no .nk2 file to be found. I'm
starting to feel like I've entered some worm hole! The only other
thing I can add is that I have installed Lookout (which seems to be a
really nice ex-product now that MS has bought it). Still, I believe I
had this behavior before I installed it even if my brain is a bit
fried.

If you think Lookout is responsible, you might disable it for a while. You
can also try using a new profile. .nk2 files are profile-specific, so if
there's a problem with the current one, a new profile might fix it.

Probem solved, well almost. The nk2 file was actually there all
along, but I was not seeing it beacuse Explorer search was not
checking for system & hidden files (even though I had enabled viewing
them through Tools / Folder Options. Geeze I wish I didn't have to go
back and reenable this with every new installation. Caused me to go
nuts for a few days and waste a bunch of people's time.

I say almost solved, because when I renamed and copied my old .nk2
file over the new one, autocomplete works for all of my old entries,
but it is not adding the new ones! I have a coworker with the
identical problem, The file date does change, it's just the new
entries aren't being added.

I can also confirm that Lookout is not causing any interferance, and
is also working very well for me. I'm disappointed to see it
discontinued, and hope that MS will not screw it up if they eventually
decide to use it to replace the current search engine. I previously
tried X1 but dumped it because of cost and it occassionally bogged my
system, even when it wasn't indexing.
