Destop Icon Background color?

My desktop icons have a short ID tag under them. Today for some reason they
all have a solid color behind the lettered tag. I can change the color but
can not get rid of the the solid color. How do I get a transparent
background?

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click
Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop shadows for icon
labels on the desktop option", and click Ok.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects - check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".
2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be cleared.
3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work. To
check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web -
make sure all checkboxes are clear.
4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

How to restore Icon label Transparency

Right click on the My Computer Icon.
Then select the Properties option.
Next click on the Advanced tab in the System Properties window.
Now click on the Settings button in the box labeled Performance.
Click on the Visual Effects tab in the Performance Options window.
Scroll down and check the box titled 'Use drop shadows for icon labels on
the desktop'.
Finally click the OK button, then click OK once more.

Hi Milke,
Please allow me to join this investigation even though I did not originate
the conversation. I have been trying for ten days to find the answer to
Lanciae's problem for myself. From the hundreds of answers that I have seen,
your four requirements are mentioned most frequently. However I have
concerns about two of those requirements.

#2 - After I right click on the Desktop and then highlight "Arrange Icons
By", there is no selection "Lock Web items". The available choices are Name,
Size, Type, Modified, Show In Groups (grayed out), Auto Arrange and Align to
Grid.

#3 - After I select "Customize Desktop", there is no Web tab (only General
tab).

I have a Dell Dimension E510 computer, MS Windows XP Home Edition Service
Pack 3 and IE 7 (7.0.5730.13).

If you need additional information, please ask. I really want to resove
this issue.
Thanks.
