Desperate: Need Help with W2K & SP4 Problems

D

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to install SP4 on my dual CPU W2K
machine. I've installed and uninstalled it probably 3 or 4 times, and
everytime I try, on the reboot... that nasty blue screen comes up. So
I uninstall, and for some strange reason, the machine has become
unstable with regard to using the windows browser or outlook express.
The machine seems to lock up and when I go into task manager, it says
these modules are not responding.

Now ironically, I can use a program like Free Agent (newsreader)
without a problem, and all my regular apps work fine... it's just
anything to do with outlook express or explorer. In fact Netscape
v.7.1 works perfectly even though it was not selected as my default
browser. No hangups or anything.

I'm on a cable modem with a router, and this machine is linked to the
router via a switch (different part of the house). When I boot this
machine, it starts out with the administrator's setup, then I log off
administrator and logon as the "user". That's when the problems seem
to start. I even got a Dr.Watson erro... think itwas "87"?

What I'd like to know is whether there's a "safe" way to install SP4,
and also, when I did the windows updates, I thought I saw one of the
hotfixes with "SP5" in it? Q818043. Should I disconnect my NIC cable,
and if that's a good idea... how do I actually DL the SP4 and then
install?

SP4 seems to be the most problematic service pack I have ever seen,
and by the hundreds of posts I've seen asking for help, it would seem
that Microsoft has released a very shaky piece of software that is
making many machines unstable. I would sincerely appreciate some help
with this problem because I think this machine is slowly getting out
of my grasp. Hope that some brilliant reader or MVP here will lecture
me like a schoolboy and give me a list of do's and don'ts to solve my
problems. Thanks in advance.

Mike ...

The first thing to do is download the network install version of SP4.

You can get it here ...
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/download.asp#network

The next thing I would do is disconnect from your network and disable all
superfluous 3rd party services ... virus scanner, undelete programs, etc.
You should reboot after disabling the services. From there, run the
install.

If you are getting a bluescreen after doing this, please write down the
information on the screen and post it here. We will definitely help you try
and determine what is causing it.

Britten...

OK, I unplugged my NIC, disabled AVG, and tried it again. No dice.
And here's what she wrote:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0xBAD0B0E4, 0x00000002, 0x00000001 0x8006543A)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

*** ADRESS 8006543A base at 80062000, DateStamp 3e7a733a_hal.dll

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error..... Blah, Blah,
Blah. Tells me to try and restart, and remove anything new (hardware
or software). Needless to say, nothing is new except for SP4, and the
machine was running fine until I started installing all the hotfixes
and SP4.

So I hope this gives you a clue about my problems, and once again...
thanks so much for taking the time to listen to my woes.

I should also point out that when I try to open Windows Explorer
Browser, the machine seems to lock up, but when I open Netscape's
browser, everything is fine. Likewise, when I open Outlook Express it
takes forever to open and check mail... like 3-4 minutes.

Photoshop, Corel, all my non MS APPs work normally. I also count 35
Windows 2000 Hotfixes for SP4 and one (1) for SP5 (Q818043).

Should I uninstall all these hotfixes?

Anyone willing to take a crack at solving my problem? I think I'll
remove all the MS hotfixes in the meantime because the machine was
stable before I started fixing all the bugs MS thought there was. It
seems like every week there's new security patches, which suggests
that MS has a awful standard for OS codewriters.

Can you explain that a little better? User having Administrative
Rights, that is. Normally, I boot into Administrator, and then logoff
administrator, and as the primary user. This is _MY_ own home primary
machine, but it is on a small LAN here at home. I've uninstalled all
the MS hotfixes, and now can use Windows Explorer Browser in the
Administrator page. Haven't tried it yet in my user setup. Guess I
will. But no... I'm not trying to upgrade to SP4 as the user... I'm
trying to do it in Administrator.

More Information that might help:

Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000006 Flags:0x0000000

Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000070269463

I'm still stumped. In my administrator "page" the machine seems 100%
normal, but when I logoff administrator and logon as user, that's when
internet explorer freezes halfway when opening the page.

Still waiting for some help.
