Everyday at about 6PM my desktop icons reset themselves
to different positions. I have checked all the settings I
can think of and they all look OK.

Check scheduled events for 6 PM. What do you have taking place? If
you have no scheduled event or task that runs at 6 PM daily, then I
would say your machine is possessed.
