I have a blue strip down the left hand side of the screen about 2 inches wide
and it has 3 categories the top one is Folder tasks the middle one says Other
Places and the bottom one says Details. HOW do I get rid of it. Also the
icons are attached to it as if I click on an icon it comes up under Details
etc along with all this I cannot move the icons anywhere other than where
they are and I cannot drag and drop them into the Recycled bin. Can anyone
help me please.

Thank you but I have just done as you said and when I opened it with Winzip
it came up a box that said that the "Value below is correct and that no
repairs are necessary" file://%userappdata%\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop.htt

I have a blue strip down the left hand side of
the screen about 2 inches wide and it has 3
categories the top one is Folder tasks the
middle one says Other Places and the bottom
one says Details.

That's the normal XP format.

HOW do I get rid of it.

Switch to Classic view.

Start Menu
Control Panel
Appearences & Themes
General Tab
Tasks - choose Windows Classic View.

To change your Start menu to Classic view as well: Right-click your
taskbar, choose Properties, then Start-up tab, choose Classic view.

Also the icons are attached to it as if I click on
an icon it comes up under Details etc along with
all this I cannot move the icons anywhere other
than where they are and I cannot drag and drop
them into the Recycled bin.

The icons are not attached to it. That lower panel is just showing you a
preview of the file you've selected by clicking on it once. You have to
drag & drop the actual file, not the preview.

Thanks for the update! I don't know why it did not work in the first attempt though?
