Desktop problem

Desktop has been overlaid by unwanted advert.
I have tried various solutions to rid myself of this menace
i.e. ad-aware, registry mechanic, spybot search, schredder,
anti-virus check, system restore, but all to no avail.
Latest effort was to delete offending file but I know find that original advetisement is gone but a white screen has replaced it, with my original desktop screen underneath.
Icons are still visible and usable

Have you gone to Display Properties, Desktop, Customize Desktop, the Web tab
and removed any entries from there?
