Desktop Power Failure...

I've been having a problem with my system loosing power and when I press the
Power button, it fails to start as if there is no power to the power
supply... does this should like a hardware problem with the switch failing
(bad contacts) or is that new virus I've been hearing something about on the
news possibly have something to do with the system not wanting to power up.
Since the system does shut down when you tell it to power down... can a
virus cause the system to shut down and fail to reset or start?

Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Likely the power supply or
motherboard. It is possible for a virus to cause similar problems by
corrupting the BIOS. (It's more likely that you have a hardware problem.)

One other situation that makes me think it might be a virus, the system will
shut down during the day and then the problem occurs. If I unplug it and
replug it back in, then press the power button, it will come on.

Try a new power supply.
