Desktop organization

In WinXP on my computer the desktop icons "snap" into place
on the desktop. In other words, it's as though they all have
cubbyholes they have to fit into. Is there a way to prevent
that, so I can put the icons anywhere I want? That's the way
it worked when I had Win2k, but I don't see anything in the
help file on this.

Try a right-click on the Desktop|ARRANGE ICONS BY and UNcheck Auto Arrange

Hi,

Right-click the desktop, select "arrange icons by-->" and uncheck (click on)
autoarrange.

Try a right-click on the Desktop|ARRANGE ICONS BY
and UNcheck Auto Arrange

That wasn't it, but it led me immediately to the solution: I
now see that, unlike Win2k, WinXP has an "Align to Grid"
selection in the context menu, and that's what was checked.
Unchecking it (with auto-arrange already unchecked) made it
work the way I wanted.
