Desktop minimizes

For no apparent reason, the size of my desktop decreased
by approx 25%. I attempted to restore it to it's normal
size first by re-starting. When this didn't work, I opened
desktop properties, settings, and played with the number
of pixels, and while I was able to restore the desktop to
the full size of my window, the icons, and all web pages,
docs, jpg's, etc, remained reduced. Does anyone know what
went wrong, and how I can rstore my desktop to it's
previous settings?

The desktop reduced in size? Do you mean that the area that is NOT the desktop on your screen is now black? If that is the case enlarge the screen by using the controls on your monitor.

The refresh frequency could have changed (Desktop->Properties
->Settings->Advanced->Monitor->Refresh Frequency)
I lowered mine to have the desktop fit the monitor.
