after trying to install an antivirus program (AVG) my desktop dissapeared and
I have no taskbar. I do have a logon screen and it accepts my logon but then
opens to an empty desktop. I can access only through the task manager but of
course not the full functionality as with the desktop.
Would appreciate any help, Thanks.

Robert,

From Task Manager, click File, New Task (Run...), type (without the
quotation marks) "%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" and click OK.
Then restore the system to a point when AVG was NOT installed on your
computer.

Robert,

What happens when you press 'Ctrl, Alt & Delete' keys, from Task Manager,
click File > New Task (Run...), type explorer and click OK?

Daniel,
Thanks for you input, I tried this and the results are the same I also tried
to reinstall windows choosing an upgrade and received a windows message that
the operation cannot be completed because a program has not completed it's
installation yet (not windows) but I cannot find any incomplete program
installations.

Drew, thanks for your input.

Can your start Windows in Safe Mode? If so, perform a clean boot of XP and
