Desktop icons

Got a question for you off my 70/270 that I am going to get wrong unless one
of you kind fellas can explain why my choice is wrong. I know this isn't the
right place for quizzes but this has really got me going. The question is
this from computeach

You install windows XP pro on your home computer. When the installation
concludes, you see only the recycle bin icaon on the desktop. You do not see
the my computer, my network places or my documents icaons on the desktop you
want these icons to appear on the desktop.

A enable use windows classic folders in folder options
I have put windows classic folders view just takes your folder view back to
the old 98 view, and is for folder views.
B Switch to classic start menu
I have put classic start menu gives you the small one layer up view from
start menu
C Configure folders to use the simple folder view
I have put simple folder view closes all folders as you click through them
so that one is open rather than all of the folders opening in a new window
D Right click the desktop and select show desktop icons
And I have put on first boot of windows right click, but from then on you
need to perform the right click select properties/desktop/customise and tick
the four boxes at the top.

I have been told that D is wrong but trialled all other options and they
dont work?
It's driving me nuts
Anyone able to help I would appreciate it greatly.

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab |
Customize Desktop button | General tab | Desktop icons
My Documents
My Computer
My Network Places
Internet Explorer
[[Specifies whether these Windows items will appear as icons on your
desktop. Select the check box if you want the item to appear on your
desktop; clear the check box if you do not want the item to appear on your

phil,

If the XP installation is an upgrade from a previous OS, D would be correct.

[[Note If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, and Show
Desktop Icons was turned off in the previous Windows version, this setting
is maintained, and user icons appear to be missing from the desktop. The
Show Desktop Icons setting is ignored in previous versions of Windows if
Active Desktop is turned off. In Windows XP, Active Desktop is always turned
on and cannot be disabled.]]

[[By default, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on for clean
installations of Windows XP, but the Recycle Bin is the only icon that is
put on the desktop. If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows
XP, all user icons remain on the desktop. By default, the My Computer, My
Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons are no longer put
on the desktop for clean installations or upgrades. ]]

Certainly has been helpful thanks very much Wesley, it seems my head banging
was correct, what you have basically told me is the question that i have been
set is out of date, microsoft have set the question and the system has been
upgraded since the question was set, so in theory one of the other answers
probably worked on an older version of XP, but not on a clean install. I went
with D as the only answer I could work out on my XP clean install and tried
all other options but none related to the desktop, but those guys at
Microsoft insist on you getting the Q right. Hell I feel like a beer this
ones had me over a barrel today, if you where over here fella I'd get you one
aswell, thanks

All are wrong. By default a fresh install of XP has only Recycle bin on
the desktop. To get the others, Control Panel - Display (or r-click in
the Desktop - Properties). On the Desktop page, click customise
Desktop, and you will see these other items where you can check boxes to
show them, and Apply
