The icons on my desktop all have a background color behind the words;
how do I make them transparent?
On my laptop, they are all transparent.

To have transparent icons:

1) Hold down the Windows key and press Pause/Break. On the "Advanced" tab,
under "Performance" click "Settings." On the "Visual Effects" tab, make sure
the box "Use drop shadows for icon labels" is checked.

2) Right-click on the Desktop, and make sure that "Arrange Icons by" "Lock
Web items" is not checked.

3) Right-click on the Desktop, and choose Properties. Othe "Desktop" tab,
click "Customize Desktop," then on the "Web" tab, uncheck all boxes.

4) Make sure any Wallpaper is an image file. Html will stop the
transparency.

I've been trying to figure out how to solve this problem myself for the past
few days!! I even contacted Dell and they were having me try a system restore
and all kinds of other stuff that didn't work. So, Thanks! from me also :)

HI,
If you right click "my computer" and go into properties > Advanced >
Performance settings. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure "use
drop shadow for icon labels on desktop" is selected.
That should sort it out for you.

First, if you would take the trouble to read my message, which you quoted
above, you would see that although I said exactly the same thing, that alone
is not sufficient. There are three other potential issues, enumerated above.

Second, you are replying to someone who has already fixed it, and was
thanking me for the information.

Please read the message to which you are responding *before* you reply.
