Check the setting for the User Shell Folders in the Registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
"Common Desktop" should point to
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop
"Desktop" should point to
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop
and these folders have to exist under C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL
USERS and C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}
First, do not mess with your Registry unless you know what your'e
doing and how to back up and restore the relevant parts you may
need. It's a dangerous place for the newbie <g>.
As another poster suggested, describe just how you create the
shortcuts, including what folder you are in at the time; anything
that might be relevant. There are many variables. Also, XP Home
or Pro?
I totally agree with you Pop.
Sending someone off to play around in the registry when they do not have
enough experience to create a shortcut is NOT a good idea.
