Desktop Icons

I save some of my emails in separate folders. I tried to save the emails in
one folder as follows: In the folder titled Microsoft, I right clicked on
the picture of a folder in front of the word Microsoft and chose "Set as
Desktop Item". I thought I could then copy it from the desktop icon to a CD.
When I closed the window and returned to the desktop, all the icons were
very dark and bold and the words underneath the icons were enclosed in a
solid blue box. What did I do wrong and how do I get back my normal desktop?
