XP PRO (PRE SP2)......Logitech MX500 optical mouse:
I have programmed my mouse to have a custom button function as
a double click. I have been using this to open my desktop icons for
several months now. Suddenly, the button no longer has any effect
on the icons. I have retested and reinstalled all mouse software to
no avail. All other functions work fine. In order to open a destop icon
now, I have to use the "Open" menu or multi buttons on the mouse.
It seems that the desktop icons only become functional after doing a
Desktop properties refresh, or invoking other programs first.
Any ideas or soultions?

I just wanted to add that I have Norton System Works and Firewall
utilities installed and currently have no alerts for any kind of
virus/infections.

Download Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition, update and scan your PC for the
presence of spyware:

Thanks for the response, but why would that be necessary when
I have System Works invoked which also checks for Spyware, etc.
I am not getting any virus, adware, intrusion errors.

Suggestions and checkpoints:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit

Delete these two keys, reboot then re-set your folder options.

I find with mine that after first booting I have to select a desktop
icon, before opening, and then the double click button - the center
wheel in my case - works fine. It sounds to me as if you may be using
the side button; try switching (temporarily) to using the wheel, in
Control Panel - Mouse - Buttons (or Quick Setup and setup the device
again) and see
