Desktop Icons' Text Now Has Box of Color Around Them

B

Bennett

Friends,

Recently I did something that led to the text under my xp desktop icons to
now have a box of color around it, for lack of a better term, rather then
having the text under the icons
be simply superimposed on the desktop image. Needless to say this is quite
distracting.

I can change the color, for what it is worth, by going to Display
Properties/Desktop/Color.
But so what? I can't get rid of the colors.

The thing that may have preceeded this unpleasant change may have been
saving a word file as "an active desktop item" or something like that. But
I'm not sure.

Can anyone advise me on the fix for this?

Thanks!

Click on the Start button
Select Control Panel
If you are using WinXP style, then select Performance and Maintenance/Adjust
Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop".
For Classic style - Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings
If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange
Icons By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked;
If it still doesn't work, try
Right click on desktop. Select Properties, then open Desktop tab.
Click on the Customize Desktop button, then open the Web tab.
Delete everything in the Web Pages box except, My Current Home Page.
Press OK, then Apply, and maybe OK again.
You may have to restart for settings to take effect.

This is a cut and paste from another post in the XP Customize Newsgroup from
TaurArian [MS-MVP]:

Click on the Start button
Select Control Panel
If you're using WinXP Style, then select Performance and Maintenance/Adjust
Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop".
If you're using Classic Style - Control
Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings

If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to
Arrange
Icons By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked;

Hope it solves your problem - It hasn't fixed mine yet

Anthony:

Thanks. I tried your and TaurArian's info and that didn't work. I did some
searching and found the solution, almost, here:

" .....Make certain that you do *not* have "Lock desktop items" enabled. You
can find this option by going to to Display Properties, then clicking on the
"Desktop" tab and clicking the "Customize Desktop" button (below the list of
wallpapers). A second dialogue will appear, and you will need to click the
"Web" tab and uncheck "Lock desktop items." Now your icon text should be
rendered with transparent backgrounds. "

This sent me in the right direction but didn't quite work. What did work,
though, was to use the Delete tab to delete something listed under "Web
pages" that was there other than "My Current Home Page."
