Desktop icons missing XP Pro

One day, 80% of the icons (but not the folder/file name) disappeared! My "Show Desktop Icons" was missing but found a solutionin "http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm". BUT this did not solve the problem.

Is there a fix or should I re-install XP Pro ... and if so how do I do this without losing all my data?

You should run a scandisk first. You do this by right
clicking C: (MY COMPUTER) and clicking on properties.
then click tools and under error checking click check
now. You will have to restart the computer after. After
it is finished, if it doesn't solve the problem then u
should reinstall it. u would have to backup all ur files
onto a cd though so u should do it only as a last resort.
u should also run a disk defragment. it is also under
properties of c:.
