Desktop icons corrupted

Guest

Hi,

I use W-XP SP1. My desktop icons become corrupted. All shortcut icons lost
the sqare with the arrow (although a small line is visible where the square
should end). Some of the icons (Word, Outlook,...) are shown as green
squares. Also in the explorer some files (not all) have green-square icons
(regardless of the view and the type of the file).

What is wrong? How to fix this? Thanks!!!

Install TweakUI.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

TweakUI > Repair > Rebuild Icons > Repair now.

You may want to increase the icon cache also. Start > Run: Regedit.
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer.

Create the string value "Max Cached Icons" in the right pane and assign
the value "4096". Reboot when done.

I read this with interest, then followed your link, only to find that
TweakUI only works with US English versions of Windows. Is there a way to
manually acheive this? My Outlook icon is trashed on the Start menu (the
one that windows puts in and labels "E-mail"). If I went to the registry
key you mentioned and temporarily changed the value to zero, would this
effectively flush out the icon cache, or is this a BAD idea?

Aha! Replying to myeslf may be the first sign of madness, but I just found
what I wanted in the Knowledge Base. Changing colour depth refreshes the
icon cache, so all I need to do was change to 16-bit and back again! Many
thanks for putting the idea of a cache in my head so that I knew what to
search for.

TweakUI is installed on all of my machines under German WinXP and there
is no problem at all.

That's no good idea. Note the range of this particular value:
"Icons Randomly Change to Different Icons" (Excerpt)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/132668/

| The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 4096.
| The default value is 500.

I can't get TweakUI to install on Vista Business any other ideas I am having
the same problem with my Icons. When I try to install Tweak its says it is
not compatible with this operating system.
