Desktop Icon spacing

When the spacing (horizontal or vertical) is changed, does it take
place immediately (after clicking on Apply) or do you have to reboot?
 
Dude, why don't you try it? If the spacing changes when you click Apply,
there you go. If not, try rebooting.

The spacing changes when I reboot - but a box says to wait while the
screen goes to black and white then back to color. This indicates that
it should happen right away without rebooting.
