I would like to know if there is a file or a registry
setting that has the information for the location of the
icons on my desktop.

No single location or key stores this. There are several utilities
which do this: ActivIcons (freeware) -
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_aifw.html has this on its "Desktop
Controls" screen, and EZ-Desk ($15) - http://www.ezwaretech.com/ also
does a good job saving and restoring icon arrangements.
