Without any recollection of having done anything in this
regard, an icon for "RUpdate-Notepad" appeared on my
desktop. Can someone please advise why this has occurred
and what action is required on my part to perform any
update, if necessary, before I delete the icon. Thanks to
all.

Might be something to do with McAfee antivirus.

Try right-clicking on the icon, and select "Properties". If it's a
shortcut (there should be a little arrow in the lower left corner of the
icon), look in the line next to "Target".

If it's an actual file, there should be two lines -- "Type of file" and
"Opens with". If the "Type of file" is "Text Document" and "Opens With"
says "Notepad" then just double click and read what's in the file.

If it's not a text file and you still can't figure it out, post back
with the actual file name from the shortcut "Target" line or name of the
program it "opens with".
