Desktop Hi Jack

Booker

Greetings,

I have a problem with my desktop wallpaper which has been changed to a
warning that "You're In Danger" and I can't seem to get rid of it. I have
tried my anti virus software (Nortons) and Adaware and spybot to no avail, I
have even found where the wallpaper gifs are located and deleted them but
all this does is give me a white background. Any help would be appreciated.

Booker.

What happens when you try to change your wallpaper? Do you get an error
message or it just doesn't work? Try running SpySweeper
(www.spysweeper.com) CWShredder (umm... can't remember, Google it.)
What version of Windows are you running? Maybe try updating Internet
Explorer to IE6 SP1.
good luck

My guess is that someone has changed your background for you, most
likely remotely. What do you mean when you say that you can't seem
to get rid of it? Find a picture that you like, Open it with "Explorer"
right click and choose "set as background" - does this work?
I have
tried my anti virus software (Nortons) and Adaware and spybot to no avail, I
have even found where the wallpaper gifs are located and deleted them but
all this does is give me a white background.

Then you *did* get rid of it. :OD

Anyway, the changed background is the symptom - not the disease.

To treat the real problem, you need to tighten down your machine
security-wise, possibly including your computing practices. Many
good sites are available to help you, and I'm sure people here can
recommend their favorites to you once they know what OS you use.

file for that ' you're in danger' splash screen but its still coveing my
desktop background walpaper screen with just white/gray and i can see it
flashing trying to replicate itself after i delete more .exe's and .dlls
this has to be more prevalant than just us two . HEEEELLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!!

<Snipped out of courtesy>

When I'm stumped as to what's wrong with my system, I usually run a search
on executables, (Click "start, "find" "files or folders" *.exe) and look for
anything suspicious. (I am familiar with all the executables I do have). If
I find something that doesn't look right, I first check the properties of
the suspect file (Right click, choose properties). If it's something I don't
recognise , a quick scan with AVG (Free, of course!) If it still comes up
clean, but I don't need it, away it goes to the recycle bin.
(I don't empty the recycle bin until I reboot and make sure I didn't get rid
of something I actually DID need)
:)

I fixed the problem. What I did was a combination of the advice given. I
searched for suspicious exe files and deleted them, then I went to control
panel then to display then desktop and selected the customise desktop tab,
then I selected the web tab and low and behold there was the offending page
listed, all I had to do was deleted it and it was gone.

Thanks for the help guys.

Rather, you alleviated yourself of the symptom. How you allowed
(possibly a webpage) to do this in the first place should also be
addressed.
What I did was a combination of the advice given. I
searched for suspicious exe files and deleted them,

How does one determine that a 'suspicious looking'<?> exefile should
be deleted? Renaming is usually done first, in case it turns out to be a
'suspicious looking' needed file. ;o)
then I went to control panel then to display then desktop and selected the
customise desktop tab,

On any blank area of the desktop:

Right click - Active desktop - Customize my desktop...

or

Right click - Properties - web
then I selected the web tab and low and behold there was the offending page
listed, all I had to do was deleted it and it was gone.

Another URL could have been disastrous. I'm glad you got it sorted out,
but you really should consider tightening security so that this (or worse)
doesn't happen again.
